Free NHS Health Checks

If you are aged 40-74 and have not been previously diagnosed with vascular disease (e.g heart attack or stroke) you could  be eligible for a Free NHS Health Check!

Why should I have an NHS Health Check?

An NHS Health Check is designed to assess your risk of developing Heart Disease, Stroke, Diabetes and Kidney Disease over the next 10 years. We know that your risk of developing these problems increases with age, and there are also certain other factors that will put you at greater risk.

These are:

  • Being overweight
  • Lack of exercise
  • Smoking
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol

Even if you are feeling well, it’s worth having a health check as we can then work with you to lower your chances of developing these health problems in the future.

What happens at the NHS Health Check?

  • The health check will take about 20 minutes and is carried out by our healthcare assistant or practice nurse.
  • You will be asked some simple questions about your lifestyle and family history.
  • The nurse will then measure your height, weight and blood pressure, and also take a blood sample to check your cholesterol level.

Once we have all of your results the nurse will explain your risk to you and give you personalised advice on how you can lower your risk and maintain a healthy lifestyle. We can also sign post you to services that may help you achieve this such as smoking cessation, exercise and diet advice from Live Well Gateshead and alcohol misuse support.
